The Q&A Archives: Encouraging Bloom in Established Lilacs

Question: Our old, established lilac bushes have not bloomed in years. We have many large trees on our property. I have tried trimming them back. What else could I do to get them to bloom? Sue Blackstone Massillon, oh

Answer: It sounds like your lilacs are not blooming because they are not getting enough sunlight. Those trees just keep growing and providing more shade. Is it possible to transplant them to a site that receives more light? They need at least 6 hours of directsunlight! Transplant now before the summer heat sets in.
