I'd like some flowering shrubs in front of a line of black walnut trees. What doesn't mind the trees, likes a mostly sunny site and is deer resistant?

You might try forsythia or lilac, both of which are considered tolerant of the juglone from black walnuts. In my experience, deer do not eat these shrubs. However, deer have literally learned to eat different plants in different areas because of population pressure, so you might want to check locally to see if yours have learned to eat these yet, or not.
