I need to know if there is a problem planting other trees such as red delicious apple, and cherry trees anywhere close to a black walnut. How far away do they need to be if they are sensitive to the juglone that the black walnut emits? |
In general, apple and cherry are considered tolerant of the juglone from the black walnuts, however the trees will not be healthy if they are planted too close to such a large tree. This would be simply because of the normal results of crowding and competition for light, water, air and nutrients. Ideally, you would plant them beyond the root run of the walnut, which would be, on average, about one and a half times its branch spread. Remember, too, that young walnuts can grow to be very large trees at a good clip of several feet per year. |
