The Q&A Archives: How to Transplant Sunflowers

Question: Help save my sunflowers! I have planted my seedlings indoors and they are getting big fast. I live north of Boston.

Answer: Sunflower seeds are best sown direct to the garden. They transplant poorly and do poorly under indoor conditions (as you've discovered). Place your sunflower seedlings outside in full sunlight and bring them in at night only if you suspect a frost. Plant them to the garden as quickly as possible (after danger of frosts).
