What can I do to protect my new potato plants from an expected frost/freeze tonight. Will it hurt them?

Ordinary (Irish) potatoes are planted very early and will not suffer from cold unless they have sprouted and the sprouts have emerged from the soil. If you are worried about the foliage you could cover it with soil as though hilling them over, or some straw, or a garden blanket/row cover, or possibly an old blanket or tarp.
