The Q&A Archives: Peony Bush

Question: I grew up in Ohio and loved peony bushes and since moving to California, I didn't see them. I was told that they don't do well here because our winters don't get cold enough. My brother sent me part of his from Ohio. What can I do to make sure this survives? It is a challenge to me now.

Answer: Without a winter chill, your peony won't flower. Since peonies don't like to be disturbed once they've become established, digging and refrigerating the roots isn't really an option. I don't want to completely discourage you, but I don't think you'll be successful in coaxing your peony to bloom!
