The Q&A Archives: Controlling Unruly Mint

Question: There is an unruly batch of mint that I do not want in my rose bed. The owner before us planted a whole bunch of mint and now I am trying to get rid of it ! Any tricks to killing mint ? I have tried pulling it up, digging with a shovel to get the roots, and still it keeps coming back ! HELP! Vicki Picotte Northglenn, CO

Answer: Mint is a formidible plant when categorized as a weed. Because the plant sends out underground runners in all directions, it's built for survival. If you pull out as much as possible, raking the soil for small root pieces, and then put down landscape fabric or other sturdy mulch, you can control it, but it really can't be eradicated, even with nasty chemicals. Whenever you see it popping up, pull it up as best you can. Or, invite a mint-lover over to harvest it for tea!
