I want to start some Kochia from seed I have stored in my refrigerator. Does it need to be frozen to germinate? What is the proper depth to cover? What is the germination period? |
I believe you are referring to an old fashioned plant called Kochia scoparia trichophila, otherwise known as fire bush, burning bush, summer cypress and belvedere. The seeds do not need to be frozen to germinate. Ideally, they should be sown about 8 weeks before your last frost date; however, you can also direct sow them outdoors once the weather has warmed. Do not cover seed, since it needs light to germinate; simply press the seed onto the moist soil surface. The seeds should germinate in 10 to 15 days. |
