The Q&A Archives: Pruning

Question: When & how is the best way to prune an azalea?

Answer: Azaleas are not usually pruned, but if it is necessary it can be done in early spring or immediately after it blooms, using a small hand pruner. It is best to prune by removing individual branches from deep inside the plant rather than to clip the tips or shear the plant. If you think the plant would be improved by a denser branching pattern, pinch out the growing tip of each branch and this will force the plant to branch again.
