What is the best type of grass for Great Falls, Montana? My sister is thinking of growing Zoysia grass here, I heard that it won't do well in our area. Can you help me?

I know that Big Sky summers can get pretty hot, which suits zoysia, but it won't survive your harsh winters. Kentucky bluegrass is the best choice for a typical lawn. For a more low-maintenance option, consider native grasses such as buffalo grass, crested wheatgrass and blue gramma, because they can take your summer dry spells better than others. You can also try one of the hardier Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue varieties. If you call your county extension office (ph# 454-6980) they'll offer you a list of varieties of these species that are tried and true in your region.

The best time to seed lawns in your are are during March/April and August/September, since there's generally more moisture available then than at other times of the growing season. Hope this helps!
