The Q&A Archives: Canteloup Varieties for the Northeast

Question: I want to grow cantaloupe in the Northeast. Is this possible? Rob Sproul Laurel Springs, NJ

Answer: Fortunately, some plant breeders who live in the Northeast like canteloupe, too! Actually, you have a relatively long growing season in NJ, but for a delicious early (74 days to maturity!) canteloupe, try Burpee's Sweet Bush Hybrid, or Sweet 'n EarlyHybrid (75 days). Just be sure to wait until the soil is warmed up before planting, keep an eye out for insect and disease problems, and provide plenty of water throughout the growing season.
