Should last year's mulch in my flower gardens be removed or mixed in with the soil? |
The old mulch can be left in place and topped up to regain a two to three inch layer if it has broken down gradually over the winter. If it has deteriorated substantially it can also be worked into the soil, although working in a very woody mulch might require the addition of some supplemental nitrogen to compensate for its high carbon content. Old rotted or composted mulch is certainly a useful soil amendment. |
