The Q&A Archives: Climate Zone

Question: You talk about "zones". What zone is Overgaard? We are on top of the Mogollon rim and almost in the White mountains. The altitude is 6,700 feet. We are definitely not Arizona desert. I don't know what to order that will do well here. Thanks. Marian Gall Overgaard, AZ

Answer: On the map, Overgaard, AZ. is zone 6, which means it gets down to 0F in winter. Being at 6700 feet elevation, I'd select trees, shrubs, and flowers that are hardy to wind and intense sun. Contact the Arizona Cooperative Extension Service(524-6271) fora plant list that will grow in your area. A good catalog to check out would be Plants of the Southwest, Agua Fria, Rt 6, Box 11A, Santa Fe, NM 87505, 505-471-2212.
