The Q&A Archives: Transplanting Tulips

Question: Last fall, I planted tulip bulbs. The tulips are starting to bloom. I need to move the tulips about 2 feet in the same general area to do some repairs.

If I dig the tulips up and re-plant them will they survive the transplant at this stage and continue to bloom?

Answer: If you do it carefully and quickly and can dig up the mass of roots under each bulb along with a big chunk of soil, yes. When you do it, replant immediately at the same depth as they grew before and water to settle the soil; with any luck they will never know they were moved.
