How should I mail iris rhizomes to my niece in Tucson, Arizona? Should I shake off the dirt, wrap in dry paper and add some peat?

Iris rhizomes can be wrapped in clean dry paper to cushion them and boxed as is for shipping. Avoid anything that might trap moisture (such as plastic bags). Also wrap sufficiently to insulate them from exposure to cold while in transit. You might add some peat moss but paper would be less messy. You might also check if there are any restrictions on shipping plants to that state.
