May I use shells instead of stones for the first layer of my terrarium? I love the beach and have collected many very pretty pieces of shells but am not sure if this would be harmful.

I think it would be alright; my only concern would be that over time the leaching from the shells might affect the soil pH slightly, tending to shift it toward the alkaline side. However, you will be repotting or refreshing the soil periodically so I doubt that would become a prblem in your terrarium.
