| I have a healthy tall blue perennial salvia that I am interested in propagating. I have tried a few cuttings in water but no go. Is there a trick or do I need to start from seed? |
| Salvia is best propagated from seed, but you can try to root stem cuttings in potting soil. Cut a 4"-6" stem and strip off the lower leaves. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone and place in moistened potting soil so that at least one old leaf scar (node) is buried in the growing medium. Place the pot outdoors in a protected place and keep the soil moist but not soggy wet. If the cutting roots successfully new growth will appear along the stem. After new leaves and stems develop you can transplant your cuttings into the garden. |
