What can I plant under a pine tree for ground cover that adds some color? |
The soil beneath pines is generally dry because of tree roots and the way the tree canopy diverts rainwater. It also tends to be acidic. Flowering groundcovers that thrive under these conditions include Vinca minor, Houttuynia, Lysimachia nummularia, and Cornus canadensis. Other suggestions include Corydalis lutea, Sarcococca and Pratia. Expect to water more frequently under your pines to provide necessary moisture to the groundcovers, at least until they become established. |
