| It's still early enough in the season to start tomatoes from seed. If the weather is mild (50F or higher at night), you can start your seeds directly out in the garden. If it's still a bit cold at night you can start your seeds indoors and transplant the seedlings out into the garden in a few weeks. For indoor sowing, use moistened seed starting mix in trays or individual pots, place seeds on the surface of the growing medium and just cover with additional soil. Keep the trays or pots in a warm place (75F-85F) and seeds should germinate in 6-14 days. Once they emerge, move the seedlings to a brightly lit area and keep the soil moist but not soggy wet. Provide 12-14 hours of light each day (fluorescent lights are perfect for this). When your seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves they can be transplanted into larger pots or hardened off and transplanted outdoors. Hope you have a bountiful harvest of tomatoes! |
