The Q&A Archives: Small Trees Suitable for Planting Close to a House

Question: I am looking for a small/short tree to plant next to my deck. I don't want one that will grow too tall or too wide since it will be approximately 3-4 feet from the deck and not far from the house. Joey Jesup Huntsville, AL

Answer: The first thing to consider is how close the tree will be to your house, since as a tree grows, roots can interfere with the house's foundation. If you can plant the tree at least several feet from your house, a small columnar juniper, or dwarf fruit tree may be nice. Much depends on what affect you are looking for - shade, color, bloom, fruit, etc. A local nursery can advise you on the best varieties of trees and shrubs for your climate.
