Answer: Cuttings and division are the preferred methods of starting new mums. Cuttings should be about four inches long and root readily. Divisions are best taken from the outer edge of the plant where the growth is most vigorous. Since this was a gift plant, there is a chance that it is a variety well suited to greenhouse growing, but less well suited to the garden environment, and possibly not a winter hardy type.
