The Q&A Archives: Mums

Question: How do I start new mums? I received a lovely plant for Easter and would like to start a few more like it. Do I use cuttings or wait for a seed of some sort?

Answer: Cuttings and division are the preferred methods of starting new mums. Cuttings should be about four inches long and root readily. Divisions are best taken from the outer edge of the plant where the growth is most vigorous. Since this was a gift plant, there is a chance that it is a variety well suited to greenhouse growing, but less well suited to the garden environment, and possibly not a winter hardy type. Keep this in mind when planning where to use it. Good luck with your new mums!
