I have an area in my backyard that is shaded by a couple trees in the Prunus family. There are a couple ferns and a rhododendron growing there, now. I have planted potatoes and some basil and some peas in the past; and even tried pumpkins and Danish Acorn Squash. Nothing seems to do too well. Can you suggest something (vegi-wise)for this area? It does get some afternoon sun, but it is generally shaded? |
You'll have much better luck with leafy veggies and members of the cabbage family in your shady garden. Lettuce, spinach, kale and cabbage will all tolerate shade. Avoid anything that flowers and bears fruit - they require 6-8 hours of direct sunshine each day. Hope you have a terrific harvest! |
