| I'm looking for a species suitable for a privacy hedge (preferred) or a climber for a trellis. It needs to flourish in dry, hard San Diego soil and in my narrow bed, about ten inches wide by fifteen feet long. I'd like a fast-grower that would reach about 5 feet tall. (Bouganvilla has not done well in this bed.) |
| The narrowness of your planting bed makes the choices rather narrow, too, but I'd suggest Cotoneaster, Dodonaea viscosa (hop bush), Grewia occidentalis (lavender starflower), Murraya paniculata (orange jessamine) or Arborvitae. Your new plants will thrive if you amend the bed with organic matter prior to planting. Spread 3"-4" of organic matter over the top and dig it in to a depth of about 8". This will loosen the soil and help it retain moisture, which will give your new plants a good start. |
