Every year I get bugs eating my hollyhock leaves. I never see any, just holes appear on the leaves. I've tried spraying with a water/dishwashing detergent to deter them, but I'm still having the problem. Is there something stronger to use, but not damage the plant?

Several pests have a taste for hollyhock leaves. A good fall clean up can help reduce the number of overwintering pests, and for a repellent you might try a spray product containing neem.
