We want to start red twig dogwood hedge in a lightly shaded area, we have heavy clay soil, and the area is rather wet. How closely should we space the plants?

Red twig dogwoods (either Cornus sericea and Cornus sanguinea) tend to sucker and spread from the roots, and can ultimately reach a width of ten feet in a thicket formation. For a good hedge in a short time, you might space them three or four feet apart. They do like a moister soil, so they should do well for you.
