| We are building a new house and I want to take along my daffodil bulbs. Can I dig them up now or immediately after finished blooming and move them to the new homesite? I know they usually are planted in the fall, but by then we will have moved from the old house. |
| You can move them now if you are careful to replant them immediately and at the same depth as they grew before, then water them well to settle the soil. Try to dig them with a root ball, including the roots under the bulbs and some soil. If that's not possible, you may find that they skip a year of bloom next year. You can also wait until the foliage has dried, then dig them, dry them off in one layer and hold them in a dry area at room temperature until fall; if your house is air conditioned this is usually dry enough and cool enough. Be careful to store them in a single layer in a location with good air circulation and check them periodically so you can remove any that may be rotting. |
