The Q&A Archives: Flowers That Attact Bees

Question: We moved into a home with a built-in pool and are interested in adding colorful flowers around the sides. What type of flower would you recommend for a sunny area that would not attract a lot of bees (as we seem to have a lot of them in our yard)?

Answer: Unfortunately, flowers and bees just seem to go together. If you want to limit the attraction to bees, you might consider planting flowers that bloom in early spring before the pool season begins such as spring bulbs, lilacs and forsythia, or perhaps planting things with attractive foliage rather than flowers. For this purpose you might consider evergreens with different needle colors and textures or possibly a variety of ornamental grasses.
