| Most flowers do best in a soil that is well enriched with organic matter such as compost, rotted leaves, or aged stable manure and bedding and a very heavy soil can also be improved by adding a small amount of coarse sand. This should be worked into the soil to a depth of about a foot for perennials and about six inches for annuals. They also need a pH that is near neutral. You might want to start by running some basic soil tests to see what your soil is (or is not) lacking and then work from there. Your county extension should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results. |
