Newly planted lilacs may take several years before they are mature enough to bloom, so patience is the key. Pruning on these young plants would be limited to directing the top growth to allow air circulation and removing suckers smaller than a pencil. Any pruning should be done in spring right after the lilacs in your area bloom. Pruning later than that would potentially remove blooming woiod for the next year since lilacs bloom on "old" wood.
