I have an umbrella tree/plant that needs help. It's 6 years old and has no leaves on the bottom of the stalks but is pretty heathlty on the top of the stalks. I've seen some reallly beautiful plants that seem to grow out not up, like mine. Can you give me some tips on what to do to save my plant?

I think you are talking about a schefflera. These plants normally tend to grow leggy over time. You can start a new plant from a tip cutting and encourage it to be denser by pinching it periodically and keeping it growing in brighter light. Unfortunately, there is no way to make the leggy plant you have grow thicker at the base now.
