The Q&A Archives: Searching for Shade

Question: What types of colorful flowers can I grow in shady and moist areas? Kathrine Hannon Boston, MA

Answer: Flowering plants require some sunlight, even dappled sun, in order to bloom. Since you don't specify how shady your garden is, or whether you are looking for annual or perennial flowers, it's hard to advise what will be happy there. Impatiens are a good bet, though, as they thrive in partial to dense shade, and enjoy moist soil, and bloom all season long.
