Aphids are small, soft bodied, sucking insects that can be dislodged by a strong spray of water from the garden hose and repeated as needed. However, you might want to consult with your county extension (431-7260) to obtain a more definite identification of the pest and suggested controls for it that are also appropriate for use on Japanese maples.
