A rule of thumb is that shrubs that flower in the spring on last year's growth (lilac, forsythia, spirea, etc.) should be pruned immediately after flowering in the spring. Other shrubs that bloom later in the season on current growth shoudl be pruned in early spring. This group would include the summer flowering spireas with pink blooms, Rose of Sharon, caryopteris and butterfly bush.
