The Q&A Archives: Flowering Bush

Question: My mother had two small bushes in her yard that had red ( or dark pink) flowers. There was a hard black seed (1/8th to 1/4 inch)that came from the flower. Do you know the name of this plant?

Answer: Based on your description, it's difficult to make a guess, but it could have been four o'clocks or Mirabilis jalapa. These plants have large seeds in that range and can just about reach the size of small shrubs when well grown.
