The Q&A Archives: Hopping Brown Bugs In Flower Bed

Question: I have very small brown bugs that "hop" in my east facing front flower bed. They skeletonized my marigolds, and although I sprayed with several insecticides, nothing worked.

Answer: Based on your description I suspect you are seeing flea beetles, tiny insects about 1/16th of an inch long that "hop", although it is a bit unusual to find them eating marigolds. You might try a repellent such as a garlic or neem based spray. Also, remove any neighboring weeds and make sure to clean up well in the late fall to remove any sheltering places for them to overwinter.
