Your county extension (627-3745) should be able to help you with soil testing and interpreting the results. You may also find simple soil test kits at garden centers.

Spinach grows best in cool weather and can be planted very early, about a month before the last expected frost. To help it germinate faster, soak the seed in water the night before you plant. Make sure the soil is deeply prepared, rich, and well supplied with organic matter so that it is humusy. The pH should be between 6.0 and 6.5 and the soil should be evenly moist yet not soggy for the best results.
