The Q&A Archives: Propagating Lilac from Suckers

Question: Can I give my neighbor a part, a sucker, or propagate some part of my lilac bush for her? Her lilac is near death and mine is so healthly that it is spreading year to year. Suckers are sent out and grow further along my backyard fence. Is there any wayto "share the wealth"? Jennifer Yaffar Rockville Centre, NY (zone 6)

Answer: Yes, you can share your lilac! Just dig up some of those suckers, taking a bit of soil along with the roots, and give them to your friend to plant in her yard. The newly-planted suckers should be kept well-watered until they get established.
