| How do I prepare a flower bed for planting new flowers? |
| Your new flowers will appreciate loamy soil, so unless yours is perfect already, you'll want to add some organic matter in the form of compost, leaf mold, aged-manure or peat moss. If nothing has ever been planted in the bed, use a shovel to dig the soil to a depth of 8"-10", removing debris and stones as you go. Then spread a 3"-4" layer of organic matter over the top of the bed and dig it in well. Level the bed (but leave a slight slope to help with drainage), then plant your new flowers. You can finish the bed off by mulching around the plants to suppress weeds and slow water evaporation. With such careful preparation your flowers are sure to thrive! |
