The Q&A Archives: Mulches

Question: What is the best mulch to use around rose bushes? The bushes are scattered around our yard, and I'd like to keep weeds away. Would cedar mulch work? Also, can I put a decorative border around the bushes? Heather Fischer Philadelphia, PA

Answer: One of the best mulches for roses is bark. Whether it is cedar, pine, hemlock....., bark mulch allows for air and water penetration, but stops weeds from growing. You can also put a decorative border of annuals around the base of the plants outsidethe mulch line. Try annuals such as begonias, impatiens and 4 O-clocks which do well in shade of the roses.
