We are a nonprofit orinization with a horticulture therapy program for handiecap individuals and would like to have them grow flowering kale and cabbage this year. We are in zone 6 and reaching our summer season. When do we start the seeds to sale in 8'mum pots in late September and October with our mums. Also do we grow these plants in the shade or sun since since they are a cool weather plant.

It takes about 11 weeks or two and half to three months to grow marketable sized ornamental cabbages. The heat is a problem and the plants should be grown in as cool a location as possible, meaning one with good air circulation. Commerical growers usually use growth regulators to keep them from elongating in the heat. You may want to talk to your county extension (489-4315) about how best to do this since you will be investing so much effort into the project.
