Florists recommend putting sugar in water for cut flowers, can you give me a scientific reason on how this would help keep them fresher?

The standard formula for helping cut flowers last longer in a vase of water is one teaspoon bleach and one tablespoon sugar mixed into one gallon of water. The acid from the bleach slows bacterial growth (which can clog the vascular system) and the sugar provides nutrients to the stems and blossoms. Hope this provides you with some insight!
