| After reading through your library on what to do with bulbs that have finished flowering I understand that forced bulbs are best discarded as they will not flower again. I bought paperwhite & freesia bulbs from the store "pre-cooled". Does this mean they have been forced? I've also noticed on the freesia that I have a strange green pod growing out of where the old flower once grew. Will this be more flowers? Thank you for your help. |
| We recommend discarding bulbs that have been forced to bloom out of their normal blooming period. If you purchased pre-cooled bulbs, it's because your growing region does not provide the winter chill that these bulbs need prior to bloom. Pre-cooled is not the same as forced. So, once your bulbs have finished blooming and the leaves die down naturally, dig them up, store them in the refrigerator, then replant in December for spring bloom next year. The green pod on your freesia is a seed pod. I'd cut the old flowering stem off to allow the plant to store energy for next year's bloom. |
