| I only grow Tomatoes, Cucumbers, and Summer Squash. I understand that they are essentially in the same "family" for crop rotation purposes. Is there something I can do which will acheive the same effect without creating a new garden plot each year? THANK YOU!! |
| Cucumbers and squash are in the same group for rotation purposes, but tomatoes are separate. You will need to subdivide you area and work through it to allow for at least three years between repeats, if possible. If you use a square foot method or raised bed method, you can grow a lot more produce in a given area than expected, so the overall area might not be as large as you fear. If you allow less time, be extra careful to grow disease resistant varieties, clean up all plant debris including roots meticulously each fall and during the season as it may occur, and replenish and feed your soil with ample amounts of compost and other organic matter to try to keep it as healthy as possible. You might also devote the interim space to soil building cover crops such as buckwheat or to some other crops such as flowers or herbs. |
