Last year I planted a hardy lotus (Perry's Super Star) it was doing fine with big leaves (no blooms). However a labrador went swimming in my pond and disloged it twice each time I replanted it. This year I only have 3 leaves and they are very small 1 1/2", last year they were more like 8". What is my problem? Could I have planted it wrong? I have fertilized it this spring with stakes for water lotuses. Also I live in zone 5. Any help would be appreciated.

The water lotus leaves start out quite small, so it may be early yet to judge how much damage was really done. The fact that it survived is a good sign -- they can be tricky to plant. These plants kick into serious growth when the weather warms up and the days are longer, so it's still early. The plant will need to reestablish itself and may take some time to regain its strength. Make sure it is in a warm, full sun location and relatively shallow water for best results. (Also try to keep the dog out. )
