There is a wide variety of plants that will tolerate or even thrive in shade, so the question is more one of overall design and purpose for the plantings. Since you are beginning to plan what to plant, you might want to take a look at a book or two about landscaping to get some ideas. One I particularly like is "Gardening for Dummies" by Michael MacCaskey ISBN: 0764551302 because it addresses site analysis, landscape planning, plant selection and planting and ongoing care as well as suggests plants that do well in various situations.
