The Q&A Archives: Encouraging Moonflower

Question: I would like to plant moonflowers and morning glories in a windowbox on a deck, letting them twine down over the deck railing. Can these flowers happily grow downward? Everything I read refers to them growing upward. Thank you. Susan Dynarski Somerville, MA

Answer: I've never seen morning glories growing downward. This doesn't mean it can't happen and I tend to think they'd grow better growing upward, but it's worth a try! The moonflowers may get too big for window boxes and tend not to climb much. I'd suggest trying it on box this way to see if it works and get back to us about it. You may start a new gardening trend!
