How do I determine if I have acid or alkaline soil? I want to plant a blue hydrangea and don't want my flowers to come out pink.

To check the acidity or alkalinity, you will need a simple soil testing kit that includes a measure for pH. A relatively acid pH reading below about 5.5 should yield blue flowers, a reading above about 6.5 should give you pink flowers. In your area I would expect the soil to be normally somewhat acid. Soil test kits are available through the Burpee catalog (800-888-1447).
