The Q&A Archives: Transplanting All Kinds Of Bulbs.

Question: My Friend said I could have some of his bulbs that in his back yard. There are many kinds there and most of them are blooming right now. Can I dig them up right after they bloom because my friend would like to move them as soon as possible? If not, when do I take them? I would be able to plant them right after they are dug up.

Answer: As long as you replant them immediately at the same depth as they were growing and water them in well, and as long as you dig them with a bit of a root ball so that you have not only the bulb but also the roots growing below the bulb, you should be able to move them in bloom. With luck they won't even know they have been moved.
