| Bulb foliage needs to be allowed to grow and mature and ripen because this is how the bulbs replenish their strength to bloom again next year. This is an unsightly but necessary process. It should be allowed to turn at least half way yellow before you remove it. Ideally, it should be allowed to remain even longer. In the meantime, remove the spent blooms and their stems by clipping them at the base. You might try palnting some perennials such as daylilies in front of the bulbs so that their new incoming growth will hide the bulbs in their "ugly" stage. |
