The Q&A Archives: Bark Came Off My Crape Myrtle

Question: The bark came off the trunk of my crape myrtle tree. At this point all the leaves look healthy. Why did this happen and will the tree survive?

Answer: Bob,

That is most likely the natural exfoliating of the outer bark. It is normal for a crape myrtle and sometimes creates a bit of a color pattern (tan, brown and/or reddish brown) on the smooth bark underneath. This is one of the nice ornamental features of this great southern plant.
